Academic Program Code:  011

The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a college or university as a junior to complete a bachelor’s degree. The A.S. degree allows students to take specific courses that are equivalent to those offered in the freshman and sophomore years at four-year institutions. Bachelor’s degree programs or majors at 4-year institutions may also require specific coursework or have admission requirements which students should be aware of if they intend to transfer. Understanding all of these requirements prepares a student to enter an identified program or major at a specific college or university once they graduate from GRCC.

With careful and early planning, students who earn an A.S. degree from GRCC may meet the majority of the general education and pre-requisite requirements for the program or major in which they intend to transfer. All students who graduate with an A.S. degree will receive the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) on their GRCC transcript, if they meet the requirements of the MTA. (a grade of a “C”  or higher in each course used to meet the MTA).

Students should work with a GRCC advisor or faculty member to identify their Transfer Intent and create an individualized Transfer Plan. Transfer Plans are created by identifying a program/major at a specific 4-year institution and creating a plan that allows students to complete the first two years of that program/major here at GRCC. The Transfer Plan will inform which general education (English Composition, Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Science & Mathematics) and elective courses students should take to complete their A.S. degree.

The following Transfer Intent options are available:

  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Pre-Medicine (Biological Sciences)
  • Pre-Optometry (Biology)
  • Pre-Physician Assistant Studies (Biological Sciences)
  • Other (identify a program/major that is not on this list)

General Education Courses

The Associate of Science requires a minimum of 38 credit hours of general education. Select a minimum of 18 credit hours from the English Composition, Humanities, and Social Science courses. Select a minimum of 20 credit hours including two “two-course” sequences taken from two disciplines in Natural Science & Mathematics courses.

Thirty (30) credit hours from the English Composition, Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics courses may be used to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement requirements. All students who graduate with the A.S. degree will receive the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) on their GRCC transcript, if they meet the requirements of MTA (a grade of a “C” or higher in each course used to meet MTA).

English Composition

Select two of the following courses.

Humanities

Select two Humanities electives from two different disciplines.

Foreign Language

Social Sciences

Select PS 110 and one additional Social Science course from a discipline other than PS.

Political Science

All students must take PS 110 to graduate.

Psychology

Natural Science & Mathematics

Students must take two “two course” sequences from the list below from two different disciplines (subject areas).

  • If one of the sequences is in math, students must also select a science sequence and an additional science course.  The science sequence and addtional science course must be from two different disciplinces.
  • If the two “two course” sequences are both from science disciplines a math course that meets MTA requirements must be taken.

A minimum of 20 credit hours of math and science, chosen from the lists below, is required for all students.

Program Elective Courses

Once you have selected your English Composition, Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science Mathematics and Wellness courses, you can take other GRCC courses to complete your degree. For maximum transferability, all courses should be chosen based on your identified program or major at the specific four-year institution you plan to attend. The number of elective credit hours you need to take will depend on the number of credit hours you complete in General Education courses.
