As a field of study, history helps us to understand the historical systems and events that have driven the past, produced the present, and guide the future of our world. This crucial discipline reveals human connections across time and place; it offers an ordered account and interpretations of past human experiences and their influence upon our present lives. History as a discipline provides the lenses through which one can better investigate how individuals and communities define themselves and their relationship with others. Knowledge of identity formation leads to a greater understanding of human diversity, behavior, societal growth, and development. Moreover, knowledge of history helps to us understand change and contributes to an understanding of what it means to be human and, more specifically, the components required for good citizenship in any culture. GRCC history courses teach students how to assess evidence, evaluate confl icting interpretations, and to assess past
examples of change. The college offers a number of courses in United States History, European History, and World History, including African-American History, Gender and Sexuality, Immigration and Ethnicity, Michigan History, History of Grand Rapids, and study abroad programs focused on Ireland. The analytical, research, and writing skills that students develop in these courses will serve them well, not only in expanding their knowledge of history but also in other courses and in increasing their marketability and performance in any career.
