GRCC Program:
Associate in Nursing
The Associate Degree program contains a pre-nursing semester and 41/2 semesters of nursing course work. It is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Rd. NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326. The new applicant for licensure will be asked about substance abuse and/or felony conviction. According to public statute, previous felonies or misdemeanors for substance abuse, physical abuse, and/or criminal sexual conduct are likely to prevent an applicant from completing the program, taking the licensure exam NCLEX-RN and/or employment.
Program Requirements:
In order to be eligible for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, students must:
- Be high school graduates or have passed the high school equivalency GED (General Educational Development) Test.
- Have a high school grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5.
- Have completed one-year courses in high school chemistry, biology and algebra with “C-” or higher in each. (Suitable equivalent courses available at GRCC are CHM 110 , BI 101 , or any Biology with a lab, and MA 98 .)
- Have a negative urine drug screen and complete the criminal background check process. Students will not be allowed to enter the program until cleared by GRCC police. This is a requirement of the Nursing Programs as clinical facilities are required to follow Michigan Public Acts 27, 28, and 29 of 2006. Without a clear criminal background, it is possible a student would not be allowed to participate in clinical activities and thus, be unable to complete the GRCC Nursing Programs. - Score at least 75% on the HESI test (fee). This test assesses knowledge in reading, vocabulary, grammar, and math. To be eligible for ADN, students must earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0. All Biology courses must be successfully completed within two attempts with a grade of “C-” or higher. In addition, once in the program, students must achieve at least 80% in each of the required Associate Degree Nursing courses to be eligible for graduation.
Students who fail to complete any or all Biology courses within two attempts with a grade of C- or higher, will be withdrawn from the ready list and unable to enroll in Nursing courses or reapply to the Associate Nursing Degree Program until successfully completing BI 121 , BI 122 , and BI 126 or BI 127 .
Opportunities exist for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with current unencumbered licenses to enter the ADN program with advanced standing. Contact the Nursing Department or view the Nursing Programs Web site (www.grcc.edu/nursing) for additional information.
Life science courses, such as BI 121 , BI 122 , BI 126 , and BI 127 must have been completed within eight years of graduation/completion of the specific Health program at GRCC.
The determination of the transferability of nursing courses from college-credit-granting institutions rests with the Program Director and Associate Dean of the School of Workforce Development. In case of conflict, the Dean of the School of Workforce Development shall render a judgment. Any nursing courses being considered for transfer must have been completed within 3-years of applications.

CH = Contact Hours: The number of class hours of attendance required per week.
MT = Meeting Time: The number of 60-minute class hours of attendance required per week. A virgule (/) separates “lecture” hours (listed first) from “laboratory” or “clinical” hours. Break time is not included in this total.
