Green Construction Remodeling

GRCC Job Training Choices: (non-credit)


18 Weeks

Overview:

This Job Training program will take place at the construction site and in the classroom. Students will have hands-on learning and application remodeling an existing home using LEED for Homes guidelines. They will also work in the classroom using the NCCER Level I and II Carpentry Curriculum. Students will learn the entire process of remodeling a home including key building materials, blue print reading, site layout, concrete, framing, door/window installation, roofing, siding, and interior finishing.

Prerequisites:

This advanced program is recommended for students that have completed the GRCC Introduction to Construction program or other similar construction program. An assessment will be provided to determine the student’s level of knowledge prior to being accepted in the program.

Course Recommendations:

The student should demonstrate reading and math skills. One should also posse the ability to work with others, follow direction, and attend class regularly. Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity are also recommended.

Course Outline:

  • Identify key building materials
  • Understand the concepts of blueprint reading
  • Operate hand and power tools
  • Perform framing to LEED for Homes specifications
  • Demonstrate roofing applications
  • Remove and install windows, exterior doors, and finishes
  • Demonstrate safe demolition practices
  • Identify and install thermal and moisture protection systems
  • Measure, cut-out, and install stairway
  • Install interior finishes: doors, windows, floor, paint, and cabinets
  • Course utilizes the NCCER Level I and II Carpentry Curriculum
  • Course follows the United State Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes Guidelines
