College Level Prerequisites: “GRCC College Level Math (Math ACT 18 or higher OR successful completion of MA098 or higher OR Algebra Accuplacer 76 or higher)”, “GRCC College Level Writing (English ACT 18 or higher OR successful completion of EN 097 or higher OR English (Write Placer Plus) 5 or higher)” Description: GH 200 offers a comprehensive introduction to the science of human nutrition. This course provides the foundation for understanding the relationships between foods and nutrients to diet, weight control, physical activity, and diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer. The major nutrient classes, carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water are studied so their relationships to dietary needs from pregnancy through older adulthood are understood. Current dietary recommendations and policies including the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) and Food Labeling are compared and contrasted. This course is offered primarily for students seeking degrees in dietetics and exercise science programs and for those who wish to develop a better understanding of the science of human nutrition.
