BI 205 - Plant Taxonomy at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 4 Prerequisites: BI 151 (C or Higher) or BI 152 (C or Higher) or BI 153 (C or Higher) or BI 154 (C or Higher) or Instructor Consent

College Level Prerequisites: None Description: This field course introduces students to the taxonomy and ecology of the flora of West Michigan. The flora is studied through integrated lecture and field-based activities. Students learn to use a dichotomous key, the characteristics of major plant families, and life history traits of specific members of the flora. Participation in 3 hours of on-campus lecture prior to the off-campus experience at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, a synoptic collection, keying quizzes, a practical exam and a 1 hour on-campus meeting following the field experience are required of students. Students must have the physical ability to participate in hiking and strenuous outdoor activity for several hours per day and the ability to work collaboratively. Participation in the entire off campus experience is required. Housing and meals are included in the course fee.
