Description: This introductory course in microbiology will prepare students with the necessary background and experience to enter medically-related fields such as nursing, dental hygiene, dental assisting, physician’s assistant, pharmacy, or physical therapy. Those pursuing a degree in biology and those desiring a basic knowledge of microbiology may also find the course of interest. Major topics of study include the structure and biology of a variety of microbial pathogens, techniques for culturing, identifying, and controlling pathogenic microorganisms, host-parasite relationships of infectious disease, and host defense mechanisms. The course consists of 3 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab per week during a regular semester. Recommended Skills: Other courses: B or better in high school biology, or BI 101  , or BI 117 .
