The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree. The A.S. degree allows students to complete their lower level general education requirements, as well as additional courses required for their intended transfer degree. Students who graduate with an A.S. degree are eligible to receive the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) on their GRCC transcript if they meet the requirements of the MTA (grade of a “C” or Higher in each course used to meet the MTA). Students enrolled in the A.S. program are encouraged to seek advising to determine course selections and admission requirements of their transfer institution. Understanding these requirements prepares a student to enter an identified program or major at a specific college or university once they graduate from GRCC.
Students enrolled in the A.S. will work with a GRCC advisor or faculty member to identify their Transfer Intent, and create an individualized Transfer Plan. Transfer Plans are created by identifying a program/major at a specific 4-year institution, and mapping out general education and elective courses that will allow the student to complete the first two years of that program/major at GRCC.
The following Transfer Intent options are available:
- Biology
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Pre-Medicine (various degree options)
- Pre-Optometry (Biology)
- Pre-Physician Assistant (various degree options)
- Other (identify a program/major that is not on this list)

General Education Courses
Select a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work from the General Education course list. Course work must be selected as directed in the areas below.
English Composition and Communications
All students must take EN 101.
Humanities
Select two (2) Humanities General Education Electives from two (2) different subject areas. Only one (1) Foreign Language course can be used for the Humanities requirement.
Foreign Language
Only one (1) Foreign Language course may be used as a Humanities General Education Elective.
History
For students who are in the 2016-2017 catalog year and after, a History course can now meet either a Humanities or Social Sciences requirement. Please note each History course can only count as either a Humanities or Social Science, not both.
Social Sciences
Select two (2) Social Sciences General Education Electives from two (2) different subject areas.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics
A minimum of 20 credit hours must be taken from Natural Sciences or Mathematics consisting of two “two-course” sequences and at least one (1) Math course from the General Education list.
Select from Option A: two (2) Natural Sciences Lab/Non Lab General Education Electives course sequences with at least one (1) Math course (must meet MTA).
Select from Option B: two (2) Mathematics General Education Electives with at least one (1) Math course (must meet MTA), two (2) Natural Sciences Lab/Non Lab General Education Electives course sequences and additionally, one (1) Natural Sciences Lab General Education Elective.

Program Elective Courses
Once you have selected your English Composition and Communications, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics courses, you can take other GRCC courses to complete your degree. For maximum transferability, all courses should be chosen based on your identified program or major at the specific four-year institution you plan to attend. The number of elective credit hours you need to take will depend on the number of credit hours you complete through your General Education courses.
