Description
This course follows DHY 241 and provides i n-depth instruction and application in the Dental Hygiene process of care for a variety of special population groups and medically compromised patients.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to address the dental/oral health needs and management issues of the following types of special needs patients: (CODA Standard 2-8d and 2-12)

A.  The patient with blood dyscrasias or bleeding disorders            

B.  The chemically dependent dental patient                                    

C.  The patient with eating and mental disorders                

D.  The patient with epilepsy                                   

E.  The dental patient with a hearing or vision impairment 

F. The dental patient with an oral-facial deformity, esp cleft palate       

G.  The dental patient with cancer 

2. Create and review special needs case studies using patient assessment data and data analysis. Conduct research and participate in discussions regarding various medically compromised and/or disadvantaged dental patients, by identifying:  specific oral symptomatology, oral/dental problems, specialized treatment, potential medical emergencies and expected disease resolution. (CODA Standard 2-8d and Standard 2-12)

3. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking, and problem solving skills when planning care for all population groups including evaluating current literature and using it to make evidence-based decisions for treatment planning. (CODA Standards 2-13 and 2-22)

4. Identify caries and periodontal risks and related dental hygiene interventions for individual patients. (CODA Standard 2-8d)

5. Formulate simulated special needs patient case studies, including: patient data collection; data analysis; and evaluation of disease resolution

6. Recognize and manage potential dental office emergencies that can arise in the populations studied in this course

7. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of working with interprofessional health teams to support patient needs.
