DHY 241 - Dental Hygiene Patient Care and Management II


Description
This course follows DHY 138 and provides i n-depth instruction and application in the Dental Hygiene Process of Care practice for a variety of special population groups and medically compromised patients.

Course Learning Outcomes:
 Upon completion of this course the student will be able to :

1. address the dental/oral health needs of the following types of special needs patients.

  1. geriatric dental patients
  2. dental patients with a neurologic disorder
  3. dental patients with diabetes;
  4. dental patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, esp Down syndrome and Autism
  5. physically disabled dental patients
  6. dental patients with a cardiovascular disease
  7. dental patients with disturbances of the endocrine system, esp. thyroid
  8. dental patients with HIV/AIDS
  9. dental patients with gastrointestinal disorders

2. identify potential caries and periodontal risks and related dental hygiene interventions for individual patients with special needs.

3. demonstrate the use of critical thinking and problem-solving skills when planning care for patients of a variety of population groups.

4. formulate simulated patient case studies, including patient data collection, and data analysis while working cooperatively in small groups. 

5. conduct research and participate in discussions regarding various medically compromised and disadvantaged dental patients, by identifying specific oral symptomatology, oral/systemic links to various diseases, specialized treatment and expected disease resolution. 

6. manage dental office emergencies around the special needs patients discussed in this course.

7. identify quality sources for data and information pertinent to a problem or issue being examined.
