DHY 138 - Dental Hygiene Patient Care and Management I


Description
The dental hygiene process of care is the foundation of dental hygiene practice. This course focuses on the implementation phase of the dental hygiene process of care. Students learn advanced instrumentation techniques for calculus removal. Additional clinic skills include patient management, instrument sharpening, powered instruments and dental hypersensitivity.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define and explain the steps involved for the dental hygiene prophylaxis appointment.
  2. Correctly identify and describe anatomical landmarks, restorations, bone loss and decay on BWX radiographs.
  3. Identify symptoms and theories of dentinal hypersensitivity and contrast with symptoms of pulpal necrosis. (CODA standard 2-13)
  4. Describe and demonstrate the correct technique for sharpening a posterior Gracey curette, an anterior sickle scaler and a universal curet using the moving stone technique
  5. Explain the design and function of powered instruments.
  6. Explain essential techniques for supragingival calculus removal.
  7. Explain essential techniques for subgingival calculus removal.
  8. Describe the process involved to determine the vitality of a tooth.
  9. Develop a plan to implement a solution to a problem or issue. 
  10. Translate or explain what written information means and/or how it can be used.

Masters degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
