ANE 245 - Anesthesia Technology Seminar and Certification Preparation


Description
This course serves as a capstone course for the anesthesia technology program. Students will review Anesthesia Technologist career opportunities now and future technologies. Students will discuss clinical scenarios and form patient care plans. Students will prepare for the national technologist credential exam.

1. Define the differences between breathing systems, advantages, and disadvantages, Mapleson
systems, components of the circle system, and CO2 absorbers
2. Recognize the anesthesia machine – with advanced knowledge
3. Identify cardiovascular invasive and non-invasive monitoring
4. Recite the pharmacological principles for specific surgical procedures
5. Describe the differences between each inhaled anesthetic agent available
6. Describe which analgesic agents are prepared for which specific procedure or patient
7. Identify the need for neuromuscular blocking agents
8. Explain the importance of airway management and proper airway sequencing
9. Identify cardiovascular disease and surgery process
10. Illustrate knowledge of respiratory physiology and anesthesia
11. Define respiratory disease and the anesthetic patient
12. Recognize thoracic surgery and anesthesia-associated principles and procedures
13. Describe neurosurgery and the anesthesia-associated risks

14. Explain trauma surgery and emergency anesthetic needs
15. Define the needs for pediatric anesthesia, along with obstetric anesthesia practices
16. Illustrate competence with nerve blocks and the surgical patient
17. Explain fluid management, acid-base management, and blood therapy for surgical practice
18. Define Malignant Hyperthermia
19. Identify when anesthetic complications may arise.

Course Outline:
 

  1. Breathing systems, Mapleson systems, CO2 absorption, circle system, and gas flow monitoring.
  2. Anesthesia gas machine, vaporizers, flows, ventilations, analyzers, waste gas flow, cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.
  3. Cardiovascular monitoring, ACLS, cardiovascular meds, hemodynamics, ECHO, IABP, and VAD procedures.
  4. Inhalation agents, vaporizers, and surgical procedures related to inhaled anesthetics.
  5. Intravenous medications and anesthesia principles used throughout surgical procedures.
  6. Neuromuscular blocking agents and equipment used to verify paralysis of the patient.
  7. Local anesthetics, spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, blockade anesthesia, fluid management and estimated blood loss. 
  8. Airway management, RSI, intubation equipment, LMA, glottis airway devices, OPA, NPA, and difficult airway management.
  9. Respiratory anatomy and physiology pertaining to anesthesia.
  10. Respiratory physiology pertaining to the anesthesia and surgical patient and anesthesia prep of patients with respiratory disease.
  11. Anesthesia for thoracic surgery, patient safety, and the surgical patient.  Review of emergency equipment.
  12. Renal disease and the anesthesia patient, anesthesia for genitourinary, OB, and trauma surgeries.
  13. Peripheral nerve blocks and complications.
  14. Anesthetic complications for the surgical patients and final exam review.
