OT 110 - Disabling Conditions


Description
Students will identify diagnosis related factors and information regarding the medical treatment of selected disabling conditions. Students will also apply the Occupational Therapy Process to the treatment of the selected conditions by creating evidence-based treatment plans and activities.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of disease processes including heritable diseases, genetic conditions, mental illness, disability, trauma, and injury on occupational performance.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.3.5)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts of human behavior to include the behavioral sciences, social sciences, and science of occupation.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.1.1)
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the social determinants of health for persons, groups, and populations with or at risk for disabilities and chronic health conditions. This must include an understanding of the epidemiological factors that impact the public health and welfare of populations.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.1.3)
  4. Identify and communicate to the occupational therapist the need to refer to specialists both internal and external to the profession, including community agencies.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.4.27)
  5. Understand the difference between quantitative and qualitative research studies.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.6.2)
  6. Apply scientific evidence, theories, models of practice, and frames of reference that underlie the practice of occupational therapy to guide and inform interventions for persons, groups, and populations in a variety of practice contexts and environments.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.2.1)
  7. Explain the role of sociocultural, socioeconomic, and diversity factors, as well as lifestyle choices in contemporary society to meet the needs of persons, groups, and populations (e.g., principles of psychology, sociology, and abnormal psychology).(2018 ACOTE Standard B.1.2)
  8. Engage in the consultative process with persons, groups, programs, organizations, or communities in collaboration with inter- and intra-professional colleagues.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.4.19)
  9. Utilize clinical reasoning to facilitate occupation-based interventions that address client factors. This must include interventions focused on promotion, compensation, adaptation, and prevention.(2018 ACOTE Standard B.4.3)

Faculty Credential Requirement Details: GRCC employs competent faculty members qualified to accomplish the mission and goals of the institution.  When determining acceptable qualifications of its faculty, and in compliance with Higher Learning Commission standard 3.c.2, GRCC gives primary consideration to those applicants with an earned Master’s degree or higher in a discipline related field.  GRCC also considers professional experiences, professional licensure and certifications, related work experiences in the field and contributions to the teaching discipline. 
Those faculty who do not possess the minimum educational requirement of a Master’s degree, either possess required licensure or certification, and/or related work experience (a minimum of 4,000 hours). 
Instructors must be Registered Occupational Therapists or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and licensed in the state of Michigan.
