  • CHM 100 - Basic Chemistry

    Prerequisites: MA 98  or equivalent – CHM 100 is a non-laboratory course designed to prepare students, without a chemistry background, to take CHM 120, CHM 130, or CHM 210. Topics include the periodic table, modern atomic theory, chemical bonding, measurements and mathematical relationships in chemistry. Students taking this course are expected to read the textbook and perform simple mathematical operations. Students who have successfully completed MA 107 or higher and wish to enroll in CHM 120 or CHM 130 may do so without taking CM 100 or High School chemistry as a prerequisite. CHM 100 does not fill Michigan Transfer Agreement requirements and may not transfer as general education science credit.

  • CHM 170 - Energy Storage Technology

    Prerequisites: CHM 130  / CHM 131  or CHM 150  / CHM 151  and MA 107  or any higher MA; Corequisites: CHM 140  or CHM 160  course – The course will discuss the history of energy storage, with a focus on current and developing technology in batteries and fuel cells. A significant portion of the class will be devoted to the study of hydrogen fuel cell operation, manufacture, and applications, including an overview of the requirements for hydrogen gas production, storage, and delivery. Another significant portion of the course will be devoted to the study of lithium-based battery operation, manufacture, and applications. Laboratory experiments will reinforce and extend the lecture topics. If possible, the lab experience will include trips to local facilities to observe the operation of hybrid and electric vehicles and a trip to a battery manufacturing site. This course is designed for students pursuing a one-year certificate in Battery Technology/ Energy Storage and is not intended to transfer as a General Education Natural Science course. This course serves students who are applying to the Dental Hygiene Program and some transfer allied health students. Emphasis is on measurement, bonding, acids and bases, and the classes, physical properties, and reactivity of organic molecules. These concepts are applied to the study of biomolecules and the biological pathways. This course is offered in Fall during the day and Winter during the evening.     Students use computer graphic tools and techniques to produce illustrations and will experiment with design alternatives. Computer artwork is created in both draw (Adobe Illustrator) and paint layer (Adobe Photoshop) graphics to communicate visually. Students learn to create basic to complex designs and then manipulate and edit their designs to study how this affects variations of their finished products. Students use Photoshop, image editing and enhancing software to manipulate photographs and create original computer artwork for both print and web page design.
