MUS 114 - Music Theory II

Description
This course is a continuation of MUS 113. It covers typical harmonic progressions and voice-leading techniques found in the music of the common-practice period. The course focuses on diatonic harmonies, sequences, phrase structures, secondary functions, and modulations to closely-related keys. It also includes a study of binary and ternary forms.

  1. Apply the concepts of tonic and dominant expansions, predominants, the phrase model, the use of non-chord tones, the treatment of second-inversion triads, and the use of submediant and mediant triads through the analysis and composition of short musical phrases.
  2. Analyze and compose parallel and contrasting periods and sentences. 
  3. Identify and discern between different harmonic (diatonic) sequences and their procedures.
  4. Describe and apply the use of secondary functions through the analysis of musical phrases. 
  5. Analyze musical phrases that modulate to closely-related keys.
  6. Compare and describe the differences between different types of binary and ternary forms.

  1. Tonic and dominant expansions
    1. The viio6, viiø7, and viio7 chords
    2. The passing seventh (8-7)
  2. Predominants and the phrase model (T–PD–D–T)
    1. The ii, iio6, IV, and iv chords with and without chordal sevenths
    2. Phrygian half-cadence and the plagal cadence
  3. Non-chord tones
    1. Unaccented non-chord tones
      1. PT, NT, escape tone, anticipation, pedal tone
    2. Accented non-chord tones
      1. PT, NT, appoggiatura
      2. Suspensions (4-3, 9-8, 7-6, 2-3, 7-8)
  4. Treatment of second-inversion triads (pedal, passing, arpeggiating, and cadential)
  5. Submediant and mediant triads
    1. Deceptive motion (V–vi)
  6. Periods and sentences
  7. Harmonic (diatonic) sequences
    1. Descending and ascending fifth sequences
    2. Descending third sequences (Pachelbel)
    3. Descending and ascending first-inversion triad sequences
  8. Secondary functions and tonicization
    1. Applied dominants and leading-tone chords of V
    2. Applied dominants and leading-tone chords of other harmonies
  9. Modulation to closely-related keys
    1. Direct (phrase) modulation
    2. Common-chord pivot modulation
  10. Musical forms
    1. Simple and rounded binary forms
