DHY 249 - Clinical Dental Hygiene II

1. Demonstrate understanding in a comprehensive collection of patient data to include taking/recording medical histories, performing extra/intraoral exams, dental hard tissue and periodontal exams to identify the physical and oral health status. 
2. Understand preliminary diagnostic statements based on assessment findings to address the patient’s treatment needs. 
3. Identify classifications for clinic patients according to calculus and periodontal classifications, including identification of caries and periodontal risk assessments.
4. Understand dental hygiene care plans by using the evidence-based decision-making process (ADPIED) to determine a patient care plan that reflects realistic goals and treatment strategies including appropriate desensitizing and pain management. 
5. Interpret problem-solving strategies and management of patients using critical thinking skills to provide effective and efficient dental hygiene services. 
6. Execute effective interpersonal communication skills to diverse population groups and other members of the healthcare team. 
7. Write complete and accurate recording of all documentation relevant to patient care. 
8. Expose, process, mount, and analyze diagnostic radiographs for technical errors, as well as classifying anatomic landmarks and pathology according to the American Dental Association guidelines for exposing radiographs.
9. Provide dental hygiene care for all types of classifications of periodontal disease, including patients who exhibit moderate to severe periodontal disease by graduation. 
10. Practice self-assessment skills in preparation for life-long learning.
11. Demonstrate a code of behavior consistent with teamwork by participating in sterilization, radiography, and office assisting rotations adhering to HIPAA regulations. 
12. Demonstrate professional responsibility and ethical behavior of a dental hygienist according to the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) Code of Ethics.   
13. Demonstrate an understanding of HIPAA by complying with regulations for patient privacy.
14. Show competence in providing appropriate life support measures for medical emergencies that may be encountered in the dental clinic. 
15. Demonstrate how to trial size orthodontic bands.
16. Demonstrate how to remove orthodontic bands, brackets, and adhesives (cement) with hand instruments.
17. Demonstrate how to cement orthodontic bands, initial placement of orthodontic brackets, and attachments for aligners.
18. Remove orthodontic or other cements from supragingival or subgingival surfaces with hand instruments or powered scaling instruments.
19. Demonstrate how to adjust and polish contacts and occlusion of indirect restorations, before cementation by the dentist.
