HNR 110 - Honors in Practice


Description
This course enables honors students to apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they have gained throughout the Honors Program in a hands-on, real-world context. Students will design, propose, and complete a structured learning experience that aligns with their academic discipline, personal interests, and the program’s pillars of leadership, community engagement, and research. A minimum of 30-hours of documented on-site work, approved in advance by the Honors Program, is required. Offered in a hybrid format, the course engages students in in-person, online, and virtual learning experiences, fostering reflection, professional skill development, and preparation for future academic and career pathways. Enrollment requires good academic standing and active participation in the Honors Program.

Course Outline:
30 - 40 hours field work

4 in-person class meetings

I. Prior to start of class: Identify structured learning experience and submit brief explanation of experience/responsibilities and a supervisor.

II. Professionalism and Expectations

     A. Review the purpose and significance of the “Honors in Practice” course.

          1. Requirement of Hours

          2. Communicate with supervisor about the evaluation process.

          3. Create a time sheet/hours tracker.

          4. Complete any required orientation at the structured learning experience site.

B. Review the Honors Program pillars, professionalism, and accountability from HNR 101.

III. Design the Learning Contract

     A. What is it?

          1. How does this experience align with the honors program pillars?

          2. Outline goals, activities, and communication with supervisor.

     B. Past examples

     C. Meet with supervisor to finalize and/or feedback.

IV. Learning Contract Revisions

     A. Instructor feedback on learning contract outcomes and goals

     B. Rewrite, resubmit.

V. Reflection

     A. What is reflection?

     B. Types of Reflection

     C. How to use reflection as a tool for self-assessment and personal development

Meeting #1 (first class)

  • Review the purpose and significance of the “Honors in Practice” course.
  • Review the Honors Program pillars, professionalism, and accountability from HNR 101.
  • Design the Learning Contract
    • How does this experience align with the Honors Program pillars?
    • Outline goals, activities, and communication with supervisor.
  • Introduce reflection as a tool for self-assessment and personal development.
  • Discuss the various models of communication: written reports, presentation, small group discussions.

Meeing #2 (mid-semester)

  • Small group discussions
    • How’s it going?
    • Positives/Successes? Challenges?

Meeting #3 

  • Small Group Discussions

    • Positives/Successes? New learning? Have challenges from last meeting been addresssed?
  • Practice Final Presentations.

Meeting #4 (final class)

  • Showcase the results of the structured learning experience to peers, instructors, and honors program community.
  • Discuss the transferable skills and knowledge acquired through the structured learning experience.
  • Explore opportunities to continue applying the principles of “honors in practice” in future academic and professional endeavors.

Work between In-Person Meetings

  • Participate in bi-weekly discussion board guided reflections on experiences. 
  • Meet with supervisor for mid-semester evaluation.
  • Meet with supervisor for end of semester evaluation. 
  • Add materials on this experience to the e-portfolio (completed e-portfolio requirement to complete Honors Progam).
