SUR 112 - Surgical Clinical Compliance


Description
This course includes weekly conversations relative to the clinical experience, tracking of required surgical cases, and competencies reviewed for satisfactory compliance. The instructor will review clinical site evaluations and documentation, along with validation by students, preceptors, and faculty. A review component for surgical anatomy and surgical procedures will comprise a portion of this course.

Course Learning Outcomes:
A. Discuss the relevant anatomy/physiology, expected outcomes, and possible complications of surgical procedures for core and specialty procedures as prescribed by the most recent edition of the core curriculum as published by the Association of Surgical Technologists.

B. Given invasive surgical scenarios, state sequential steps of a variety of operative procedures, along with instrumentation and necessary supplies to successfully complete such invasive procedures.

C. Define the roles of the student surgical technologist in the clinical element of the education and training portion of the program.

D. Define core surgical procedures as they relate to accreditation standards and the minimum expectations relative to completing such procedures.

E. Define surgical specialty procedures as they relate to accreditation standards and the minimum expectations relative to completing such procedures.

F. State minimum expectations of first scrubs, and levels thereof, relative to general and specialty procedures as mandated by the program and accrediting body; differentiating scrub with assist.

G. Given scenarios of communication disputes within surgical settings, describe solutions relative to inter-personal relations and communications issues.

H. Describe the interpersonal situations the student may be involved in on a day to day basis in the operating room.

I. Explain solutions for handling and/or avoiding tenuous or confrontational situations.

J. Prepare reports that document the cases the students have been involved in to meet program completion requirements.

K. Review evaluation tools and progress at the assigned clinical sites.

L. Complete all evaluation tools for surgical anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation and supplies for various procedures as listed by the instructor in core and specialty areas.

M. Differentiate between critical thinking and creative thinking alternatives relative to acceptable conclusions in a variety of scenarios.

N. Describe the variations in competency requirements as they relate to each specific clinical site.
Course Outline:
Session 1: Discuss the expectations and intent of the clinical experience.  Review all forms: time sheets, case logs, competencies, evaluations, etc.  Exchange contact information with the students, expected arrival and departure times, the importance of document validation, and explain institutional and instructor prepared syllabi with the students for successful completion of this course.

Session 16: Review all documents with students through Week 15; ensuring proper forms are completed in their entirety, proper validation has occurred, and that they are on track to meet the minimum expectations of the program and accreditation standards.  Explain comprehensive expectations and all items the students will need to provide in their meeting with the Academic Team Leader at the end of Week 16.
