EXS 257 - Health and Movement Education for Elementary Teachers


Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare future elementary school educators to incorporate quality health and physical activity content into the PK - 6 school setting. The course will focus on the important role educators play in educating the whole child. Advocacy, content knowledge, skill building, and pedagogy will be highlighted.

  1.  Develop classroom strategies that promote safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.
  2.  Demonstrate knowledge of instructional strategies and best practices to  promote health and physical activity in schools.
  3.  Demonstrate strategies to adapt congnitive and physical activities in class to meet the develpmental needs of all students through universally designing activies, and identifying adaptations and extentions.
  4.  Describe developmentally appropriate routines and management strategies fostering the engagement of play and learning, self-motivation and positive social interations that support a creative and dy namic indoor and outdoor learning environment.
  5.  Describe the school wellness program and identiy district professionals and commun ity agencies and other resources that support the students’ learning and well-being.
  6.  Examine skills-based developmentally appropriate methods of presenting health information and skills to elementary students.
  7.  Evaluate multiple models that influence (WSCC, CSPAP) and advocate for the develpment of the whole child in multiple learning domains.
  8.  Use creativity and alternative thinking to brainstorm new ideas and possible solutions to problems or issues.
  9.  Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish work.

I. What is physical activity and school health educaiton? What is the teacher’s responsibility?

II. National initiatives for wellness in schools (Whole School, Whole Child, Whole Community and Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program).

III. Why, when, and how to use movement in the classroom.

IV. Reviewing and teaching content using movement.

V. Physical education curricular models and standards.

VI. Managing classroom environments (high and low risk activities, managing physical activity).

VII. Health education curricular models and standards.

VIII. Social and emotional health.

IX. Nutrition.

X. Saftey.

XI. Personal health and wellness, substance abuse prevention.

XII. Reproductive health.

XIII. Students practive teaching content to peers or children.

XIV. Final Exam
