DAA 132 - Practicum for Registered Dental Assisting Functions


Description
This course is designed for the student to demonstrate laboratory and clinical procedures performed by a Registered Dental Assistant in Michigan.  This course builds on the student’s laboratory and clinical experience.

  1. Inspect and chart oral cavity.
  2. Assess and manage a patient for an alginate impression and complete the impression.
  3. Proportion and manipulate gypsum products to pour study and lab models.
  4. Trim and finish study models.
  5. Trim lab models.
  6. Describe various tooth numbering systems and use them correctly in a clinical setting.
  7. Proportion and manipulate a variety of dental cements.
  8. Describe and demonstrate various isolation techniques on a classmate.
  9. Placement of Class II provisional intracoronal restorations to lab competency.
  10. Placement of extra-coronal provisional restorations of various types, both custom and stock on typodonts to the standards set forth by the Michigan Board of Dentistry for licensure to lab competency.
  11. Fabricate mouth guards to clinical competency.
  12. Fabricate custom impression trays using standard lab equipment to lab competency.
  13. Application of anticariogenic agents to clinical competency.
  14. Perform selective polishing to clinical competency.
  15. Provide pre and postoperative instruction in the use and care of dental appliances.
  16. Clean and polish removable dental appliances.
  17. Shade dentition of classmates using a variety of systems.
  18. Make accurate measurements using a Boley gauge.
  19. Exhibit acceptable employability skills and ability to work efficiently alone and with others.  
  20. Apply current infection control techniques.
  21. Biologically monitor autoclaves and record information in appropriate logs.
  22. Apply dentinal desensitizers, cavity liners and bases to laboratory competence.
  23. Apply and remove gingival retraction cord on a typodont.
  24. Take final impressions on classmate to clinical competence.
  25. Fabricate bleaching trays to laboratory competence.
  26. Remove excess cement with a non-tissue cutting instrument to laboratory competence.
  27. Remove orthodontic elastics, ligatures and separators to laboratory competency.
  28. Trial size, cement and remove orthodontic bands to laboratory competency.
  29. Etch and bond orthodontic brackets to laboratory competency.
  30. Remove orthodontic adhesive.
  31. Classify occlusion to clinical competency.
  32. Perform pulp vitality testing to clinical competence.
  33. Dry endodontic canals to laboratory competency.
  34. Remove sutures to laboratory competency.
  35. Apply in-office whitening to laboratory competency.     
  36. When communicating, use language that is appropriate to the audience. 
  37. Complete work accurately, with attention to detail.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details:
Master’s degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
