DHY 128 - Pre-Clinic II Laboratory Description This course is the second of two dental hygiene preclinical laboratory courses with an emphasis on the development of more advanced dental hygiene clinical skills, leading to the skills necessary to treat patients. Laboratory hours change to clinical hours at the mid-point of the semester. Demonstrate manual supra-gingival scaling procedures using the correct anterior and/or posterior instruments, incorporating the principles of instrument shape, adaptation, angulation, activation, lateral pressure, visibility, accessibility, and prevention of patient trauma.2. Demonstrate instrument sharpening of sickles and curets. 3. Identify scaling and debridement instruments by the shape of the instrument. 4. Utilizing the skills and knowledge gained while in the dental hygiene program, successfully complete patient treatment on a selection of clinic patients. 5. Incorporate the principles of adaptation, angulation, activation, lateral pressure, and prevention of patient trauma while performing scaling on patients. 6. Demonstrate mechanical scaling procedures using the universal and straight Slim-line ultrasonic inserts, incorporating the principles of adaptation, angulation, activation, lateral pressure, and prevention of patient trauma. 7. Utilizing the findings from the assessment of the patient, develop an individualized Treatment Care Plan for the patient. 8. Demonstrate proper documentation on the following patient treatment forms: Intraoral/extraoral exam form, hard tissue chart, periodontal chart, services rendered, and treatment care plan. 9. Perform assigned sterilization duties efficiently and effectively as outlined in the following clinical rotation objectives. - Perform assigned team sterilization rotation duties efficiently and completely as outlined in the following clinical rotation objectives.
- Demonstrate punctuality and model the appropriate (PPE) attire to work in the sterilization area.
- Demonstrate appropriate surface disinfection, proper asepsis technique, instrument sterilization, and storage techniques for all instruments and equipment used in the dental hygiene clinic.
- Demonstrate appropriate operation of sterilization equipment.
10. Perform proper responses while role playing common medical emergencies in the dental environment. 11. Complete work accurately with attention to detail. 12. Manage time effectively.
