DHY 127 - Pre-Clinic II Theory


Description
This course is the second of two dental hygiene preclinical theory courses, with an emphasis on developing the student’s knowledge of more advanced dental hygiene clinical procedures, leading to the knowledge set necessary to begin patient treatment.

The student will be able to:

1. Describe the rational for manual supra-gingival scaling procedures using the correct anterior and/or posterior instruments incorporating the principles of instrument shape, adaptation, angulation, activation, lateral pressure, visibility, accessibility, and prevention of patient trauma.

2. Describe the rationale for instrument sharpening of sickles and curets.

3. Identify scaling and debridement instruments by the shape of the instrument.

4. Utilizing the findings from a patient assessment, develop an individualized Treatment Care Plan for a mock patient in the classroom setting.

5. Describe proper manual supra- and subgingival scaling techniques in a variety of patient situations identifying the correct anterior and/or posterior instruments that would be utilized.

6. Describe the rationale for mechanical scaling procedures using the universal and straight Slim-line ultrasonic inserts incorporating the principles of adaptation, angulation, activation, lateral pressure, and prevention of patient trauma.

7. Utilize and perform proper documentation on the following patient treatment forms: Intraoral/extraoral exam form, hard tissue chart, periodontal chart, services rendered, and treatment care plan during mock experiences in the classroom.

8. Describe the proper use of an air powder polishing unit including distance and angles of application, polishing material, and possible contraindications of use.

9. Recognize and describe the factors contributing to medical emergencies.

10. Describe strategies for minimizing stress factors that can lead to medical emergencies and describe the proper documentation of medical emergencies.

11. Describe the process utilized for cleaning oral prostheses.

12. Recognize and describe treatments for dentinal hypersensitivity.

13. Describe the ethical and legal restrictions on the use of recorded, published and/or confidential materials, proprietary information, and intellectual property. 

14. Discuss how communities, countries, or cultures differ in their values, politics, communication styles, beliefs, and practices.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details:
Masters degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
