AT 139 - Drawing for Personal Interest


Description
This course is offered to students who are interested in learning to draw. Students are introduced to basic drawing techniques, applied to still life and portrait studies, using black and white media. Emphasis is placed on skill building and artistic growth. AT 139 does not apply towards a drawing requirement. Students needing a drawing requirement should take AT 140  .

1. Produce drawings that have strong, balanced compositions.

2. Demonstrate the ability to use sight measuring to correctly draw from observation/mimesis.

3. Demonstrate a basic understanding and use of perspective and space.

4. Produce drawings using a full range of value including subtle value changes and contrast.

5. Demonstrate skill with the mediums and techniques used to complete a drawing.

6. Demonstrate the ability to problem solve in relation to the drawing process.

7. Produce artworks with a professional level of presentation.

 
Course Outline:
I. Composition - design elements, negative space/shape

II. Gesture - line, mass, combination

III. Measurement and Proportion - sighting techniques, angles, axis and symmetry, transparent construction

IV. Contour Line - line quality and line Weight

V. Linear Perspective - 1 pt. perspective, 2 pt. perspective, ellipses and cylinders

VI. Planar Analysis - shape and plane, structural line

VII. Value - six categories of light, value scales, local value, additive technique (render, parallel line, cross-hatch), additive and subtractive technique

VIII. Portraiture - measurement and proportion of the human head
