WE 124 - Circuit Training and Physical Fitness Description This course helps students to enhance health-related fitness with an emphasis on cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Class meetings involve physical activity sessions that incorporate all major muscle groups, alternating between cardiovascular and muscular endurance based exercises. The components of health-related fitness are assessed at the beginning and end of the semester. Course Outline: I. Introduction to Circuit Training
A. Review the course outline and methods of instruction.
B. Define the term “circuit training.”
C. Define and differentiate the components of health related fitness.
D. Apply the principles of circuit training to class sessions.
II. Introduction to physical conditioning exercises and technique
A. Explain and demonstrate the proper biomechanical principles and body postures necessary to properly and safely perform conditioning exercises.
B. Explain the need for and use of safety precautions, proper equipment, clothing, and footwear in conditioning.
III. Introduction to resistance training
A. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to increase strength, muscular endurance, and size of the upper body including; upper back, chest and arms.
B. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to increase strength, muscular endurance and size of the lower body including hips, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals, calf muscles and lower back.
C. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to increase strength, muscular endurance and size of the abdominal/midsection/core/region.
D. Explain the basic concepts utilized in the development of strength, muscular endurance, and muscular size for sports.
E. Utilize various implements for resistance training including machines, dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, and related equipment.
IV. Introduction to flexibility/mobility training
A. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to develop flexibility and mobility of the upper body including; arms, upper back, and chest.
B. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to develop flexibility and mobility of the lower body including, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals, hips, calf muscles and lower back.
C. Identify and demonstrate exercises designed to develop flexibility and mobility of the abdominal/midsection/core/region.
D. Explain the basic concepts used in the development of flexibility/mobility for sports.
VI. Introduction to cardiovascular conditioning
A. Identify and demonstrate approaches designed to develop the cardiovascular system.
B. Explain the basic concepts used in the development of cardiovascular endurance for sports.
