SL 173 - American Sign Language III Description This course is designed to increase knowledge and use of American Sign Language idioms, vocabulary and grammar in a conversational context. Students in this course examine grammatical elements in ASL, and acquire proficiency, receptively and expressively, in the use of an additional 300 ASL signs, 20 ASL idioms and 60 English idioms. Students with previous ASL experience should contact the Department of Language and Thought for information regarding placement. 2. Demonstrate the ability to use an additional 300 new signs and their modifications.
3. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and use correct ASL sentence construction.
4. Demonstrate the ability to identify various sentence types in ASL, i.e., comparative, conditional, and rhetorical sentences.
5. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend signs being used by multiple deaf individuals.
6. Demonstrate the ability to receptively translate advanced level signed ASL sentences to proper written and verbal English form.
7. Demonstrate the correct use of manual and facial grammar, body language, and correct use of numbers in ASL.
8. Demonstrate the ability to analyze a story or paragraph and translate it into ASL using appropriate ASL concepts.
9. Demonstrate the ability to translate English idioms into grammatically correct ASL structure and context.
10. Demonstrate the ability to translate ASL idioms into grammatically correct written and verbal English.
11. Demonstrate understanding of the difference between sign language interpreting and sign language transliterating.
12. Demonstrate conceptual accuracy when signing words/phrases in ASL that have multiple meanings in English.
13. Create a written summary of the main ideas extracted from information gathered.
