MUS 273 - Advanced Studio Techniques Laboratory I


Description
Advanced Studio Techniques Laboratory I develops advanced recording skills utilizing multiple microphone techniques while simultaneously recording multiple instrumentalists. This course also broadens student’s awareness and operation of the different types of mixing consoles used in the industry. The objective of this course is to provide the student with practical hands on experience via recording in stereo, medium sized musical ensembles in digital surround sound. As well, stereo music mixing skills are broadened.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of audio console operation and features of recording consoles, broadcast consoles, live sound consoles, hybrid consoles, digital consoles and workstation controllers.

  2. Choose and correctly set up XY,DIN, ORTF, MS, AB, Binaural, Blumlein pair, Faulkner phase array and decca tree stereo microphone pairs. 

  3. Demonstrate functional knowledge of stereo microphone theory.

  4. Demonstrate knowledge of stereo mixdown techniques and procedures through the development of stereo mixes.

  5. Use rules or frameworks to provide context for and understand problems or issues. 

  6. Adapt to change by developing new ideas or finding improved ways of doing things. 

  7. Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.

D. Stereo mic listening/setup activity, Baffled Omni, Faulkner Phase array

E. Stereo mic listening/setup activity Critical Distance, multiple cardioids panned
