This course is the contextual study of music in the Western European canon with emphasis on music of the European Medieval period though the early Baroque repertory of the early 1700’s. The course includes significant repertoire study, score study, listening, and employs various aesthetic and historical theories to foster discussion on art interpretation.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe expressive characteristics and aesthetic ideals of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music in both written and oral communication.

2. Identify specific musical genres and techniques associated with the repertory of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

3. Engage a list of standard Western European repertory from each period studied in the course, clearly identifying the composer of each work, the context for each work’s creation, and the ways it embraces or challenges the expressive norms of its original context.

4. Build a vocabulary of terms including standard historical composition techniques and genres, as well as a vocabulary of aesthetic theory and historical theories used to describe the Western European musical repertory.

5. Become familiar with the scholarly process, peer review standards, and bibliography.

6. Critically analyze musical works comparing and contrasting them with contemporary musical practice.

7. Discuss music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque period from a historical, philosophical, and geographic context seeking to understand the connections between music of the past and more recent musical practices.

8. Discuss the interaction of music to other contemporary art forms such as architecture , literature, visual art, and ritual arts.

9. Create a written summaries of creative ideals of each period including relevant repertory examples.

10. Form perspective and insight into the the studied repertoire using critical aesthetic and historical models as foundation.
