MUS 216 - Aural Comprehension IV Description This course is an advanced continuation of the aural skills learned in MUS 215 . Emphasis is on singing, aural identification and dictation of scales, intervals, harmonic progressions, melodic patterns, rhythmic patterns, triads and seventh chords. Development of intermediate/advanced sightsinging techniques as well as skills in notating performed melodic and harmonic musical examples. Music and materials from the modern period predominate in this class. Additional practice is required outside of class. - Notate, perform at sight, and move rhythms in both simple, compound, mixed, and complex meters that include syncopation, ties, and rests utilizing beat, division, and subdivisions in common and uncommon meter signatures.
- Sing, identify, and transcribe alternate scales, compound intervals, and 7th chords and their inversions.
- Sing and transcribe tonal melodies that modulate to closely related keys, that modulate within a two-phrase period, and that include chromatic alterations.
- Sing and transcribe atonal and neotonal melodies in both simple, compound, and complex meters. Melodies may include borrowed divisions, changing meter, complex meter, or hemiola.
- Improvise a 2-phrase modulating period, and then modulate back to the original key.
- Transcribe 4-part chorales with diatonic and chromatic harmony.

- Rhythm:
- Notate, perform at sight, and move rhythms in both simple and compound meters that include syncopation, ties, and rests utilizing beat, division, and subdivisions in common and uncommon meter signatures.
- Perform at sight and notate rhythms in both simple and compound meter with borrowed divisions of multiple divisions.
- Perform at sight and notate rhythms in complex meters.
- Perform at sight and notate rhythms in mixed meters.
- Melody:
- Sing, identify, and transcribe all modes, whole tone, pentatonic, octatonic, augmented, and Lydian flat 7 scales, while demonstrating the dichord sung (half step, whole step, augmented 2nd).
- Identify and transcribe all compound intervals played ascending, descending, and harmonically.
- Sing and transcribe 8-note atonal tone rows.
- Sing and transcribe tonal melodies that modulate to closely related keys, that modulate within a two-phrase period.
- Sing and transcribe tonal melodies that include chromatic alterations.
- Sing and transcribe atonal and neotonal melodies in both simple, compound, and complex meters. Melodies may include borrowed divisions, changing meter, complex meter, or hemiola.

- Harmony
- Sing and identify all qualities of 7th chords, and their inversions.
- Sing and resolve chromatically altered chords (applied dominants, borrowed chords, neapolitans, augmented sixth chords) in given progressions.
- Identify diatonic and chromatic harmony in 4-part chorales.
- Transcribe 4-part chorales with diatonic and chromatic harmony.
