MUS 190 - Jazz Ensemble


Description
The jazz ensemble will rehearse and perform repertoire in various styles from various periods in jazz and big band development. Improvisation will be taught and emphasized in performance. The jazz ensemble will perform 1-2 concerts per semester and meets 2 times a week. Grading is based on attendance and punctuality to rehearsals and concerts as well as demonstrated competency of the music being studied.

Course Outline:
I. Reading, preparation, and performance of musical compositions appropriate to the instrumentation and playing ability of the Ensemble.

II. Students will sing pitches to help with intonation, balance, and blend.

III. Students will pat-clap to help with the feeling of pulse

IV. Students will be expected to sing parts to help develop different articulation styles for different pieces.
