DHY 257 - Advanced Treatment Modalities and Evaluation in Dental Hygiene


Description
This course is a continuation of the ADPIE (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) principles with the focus on implementation, evaluation and maintenance of dental hygiene patients. Students study advanced treatment modalities including application of a dental dam for moisture control, alternative fulcrums, reinforced finger instrumentation, supportive periodontal therapies, and reevaluation techniques. Students will participate in analyzing case studies to prepare for  state and national licensure examinations.

  1. Plan, implement and self evaluate a study plan for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.
  2. Analyze dental hygiene case studies in preparation for dental hygiene licensure examinations.
  3. Graduates must be competent in providing the dental hygiene process of care which includes:

a.) analysis of assessment findings and use of critical thinking to address the patient’s dental hygiene treatment needs for recare intervals and periodontal maintenance.

 b.) measurement of the extent to which goals identified in the dental hygiene care plan are achieved; (CODA Standard 2-13)

  1. Graduates must be competent in the application of the principles of ethical reasoning, ethical decision making and professional responsibility as they pertain to the academic environment, research, patient care, and practice management. CODA Standard 2-19)
  2. Explain how to place and remove a dental dam.
  3. Explain uses for and demonstrate the following advanced intraoral fulcrums: cross arch fulcrum, opposite arch fulcrum, and finger-on-finger fulcrum.
  4. Explain uses for and demonstrate the following advanced extraoral fulcrums: palm facing out, chin-cup.
  5. Explain and apply industry recognized codes assigned to report dental procedures for reimbursement.
  6. Clearly and completely state and describe a problem/issue. 
  7. Identify the best solution to a problem or issue.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details:
Masters degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin's Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
