1. Relate the evolution of public health science and practice to the current roles of dental hygienists relative to dental public health. (CODA Standard 2-8d)
2. Describe various factors that affect the delivery of dental care and access to care.
3. Describe current methods of payment for dental care and the role of government in financing dental care.
4. Define a target populations’ needs based on assessment evidence and defend the need for preventive modalities in dental public health practice. (CODA Standard 2-9 and 2-16)
5. Outline the qualities of an effective public health solution and determine solutions that may meet a target populations’ needs. (CODA Standard 2-16)
6. Differentiate between the various types of epidemiological studies and apply at least two of these studies when developing an assessment of a target group. (CODA Standard 2-16)
7. Discuss the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 and 2030 and related assessment data from agency reports. Prioritize goals, choosing one or more HP 2020 goals, based on a needs assessment of a target population. (CODA Standard 2-16)
8. Select a target group, and demonstrate the use of assessment methods and cultural sensitivity in the development and planning of a community dentistry project. (CODA Standard 2-16)
9. Work in the community, with a diverse patient population to provide a variety of dental hygiene services, to include but not limited to: (CODA Standard 2-15 and 2-21)
a. providing clinical dental hygiene treatment
b. adapting to various clinical situations
c. interacting professionally with the dental patients and or caregivers
d. providing dental health education
e. summarizing the off-campus dental hygiene experience in a structured reflective journal
10. Use appropriate posture, gestures, eye contact, and vocal expressiveness to effectively communicate information.
