Course Outline: I. Recognize the Legal Aspects of Dentistry
A. File items (radiographic images, histories, correspondence) into individual patient records
B. Record patient telephone communication and professional dental and medical consultations
II. Recognize legal responsibilities and regulations in dentistry
A. Action that a dental assistant should take after a threat to sue for malpractice
B. Factors and precautions necessary to prevent lawsuits against dental personnel
C. Legal responsibilities of the dental assistant in relation to the state dental practice act
D. Patients right to privacy according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations
E. Demonstrate how to maintain and control supplies
- Order supplies, instruments and equipment to maintain specific levels
- Record and inventory items used
- Rotate expendable supplies according to the expiration date
- Rotate nonexpendable supplies according to the inventory control system
F. Understand and perform Patient reception, communication and accounting
- Demonstrate understanding appointment control process
- Basic concepts of third-party payment
- Fees charged to a patient as directed by the dentist
- Financial management of a dental office
- Initiate referral procedures for the patient as directed
- Recall systems
G. Learn how to operate computerized dental software including:
- How to appoint patients
- Complete basic financial transactions
- Insurance claims
- Form letters
- Recall reports
