This introductory course is designed to provide dental assistant students with basic knowledge of microbiology, anatomy, physiology, and the structural organization of the human body.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of human body planes, directional terms, and anatomical divisions to describe the location of body structures accurately.

  2. Describe the cellular components, including different stem cell types, and explain their roles in the human body.

  3. Identify and differentiate between the four primary tissue types and their functions within the human body.

  4. Explain the hierarchical structure of the human body from cells to body systems and describe the functional differences between organs and systems.

  5. Discuss the significance of microbiology in dental practice, including the classification, morphology, and growth requirements of various microorganisms.

  6. Differentiate between bacteria and viruses, classify microorganisms using Gram’s Stain, and explain the implications for dental health care, including infection control.

  7. Identify the components of the human skeletal, muscular, and major body systems, explaining their functions, common disorders, and relevance to dental health.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details:
Master’s degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
