COM 235 - Gender and Communication Description This course emphasizes an awareness of, sensitivity to, and competence in communication among all sexes and genders. Theories focus on family, friendship, romantic, educational and workplace relationships. The impact of the media, power and violence on gendered relationships is covered. Increased awareness and understanding of gender communication will lead to greater effectiveness, both personally and professionally. - Understand the differences and similarities between men’s and women’s and masculine, feminine, and androgynous nonverbal communication patterns.
- Recognize the role of family in impacting and influencing the development of gender communication.
- Critique the structures in education and workplace that create and affect gendered communication systems.
- Compare and contrast gendered approaches to friendships and romantic relationships through application to personal relationships.
- Critically analyze the media and the media’s impact on gender.
- Recognize gendered power and violence in interpersonal relationships and in society.
