Description
This course is an introduction to addiction theory and recovery mentoring. It includes an emphasis on advocacy and support systems in recovery, mentoring and effective treatment methods, grantsmanship, and the ethical responsibilities of the addiction professional.

  1. Engage in person centered advocacy and build recovery oriented systems of care.
  2. Identify client support systems and provide client support in the change process.
  3. Understand how to navigate health care and other community systems for client care.
  4. Identify current issues pertaining to the recovery community and advocate for recovery resources and services.
  5. Analyze effective treatment methods and evaluate the appropriate alternatives for a client.
  6. Understand and explain the basics of addiction and mental health for client understanding.
  7. Identify problem solving techniques for client use.
  8. Demonstrate skills for establishment of peer relationships and provide peer skill modeling.
  9. Identify skills of active listening and motivational interviewing and demonstrate application in addiction advocacy.

  11. Identify the professional code of ethics and the components for ethical decision making.
  12. Describe confidentiality requirements and privacy laws under Michigan and Federal laws with particular application to addiction.
  13. Understand and explain the need for professional self care, stress management, and personal development for practitioners.
  14. Define and explain relapse prevention strategies, including the role of recovery case management.
  15. Identify the process of grantsmanship and explain determination of grantor agencies/foundation and the components for successful grant writing.
  16. Identify the importance of stages of change in recovery and wellness planning, and demonstrate the importance in addiction recovery.
  17. Identify quality sources for data and information pertinent to a problem or issue being examined. 
  18. Use creativity and alternative thinking to brainstorm new ideas and possible solutions to problems and issues.
  19. Adapt to change by developing new ideas or finding improved ways of doing things.
  20. Identify ethical dilemmas associated with environmental, social, or cultural issues.
