CIS 162 - Desktop Publishing I / InDesign


Description
Students will examine the basic concepts of desktop publishing including design, layout, printing and equipment using InDesign software to gain skills for the page make-up, text preparation, and topographical measure for production of printed and web site materials. Students will analyze and create page layouts and import graphics from alternative sources to combine text and graphics using desktop publishing software. Students create and modify newsletters, menus, resumes, advertisements and identification packages.

  1. Demonstrate understanding basic concepts of desktop publishing.

  2. Use a wide range of desktop publishing tools and techniques for creating desktop publishing documents including using keyboard shortcut.

  3. Create layouts including text boxes, add text or import text from word processing programs

  4. Understand and use typographic measurement for headlines, text body, and signature lines

  5. Modify text boxes by linking them and flow text over multiple pages.

  6. Create master pages that repeat information from page to page and apply the master page attributes to individual pages.

  7. Use style sheets that modify characters and paragraphs for consistent layout features.

  8. Modify paragraph characteristics including leading, tracking, scaling, adjusting font styles, sizes and alignment.

  9. Add photographs and illustrations to layouts, modify margins, picture box properties and make basic color contrast modifications.

  10. Understand and use desktop publishing software to assemble professional quality page layouts for print and the Web including brochures, forms, newspapers, catalogs, books, indexes, tables and advertisements.

  11. Demonstrate preparation and production of layouts for different delivery systems including varying printing equipment and on line delivery.

  12. Make effective presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices when developing a communication. 

  13. Understand the role of context, audience, and purpose when developing a communication. 

  14. Use visual representations such as graphs, charts, or graphics to enhance the meaning of the message that is being communicated.
