DHY 249 - Clinical Dental Hygiene II


Description
Clinical Dental Hygiene II is the second of the three patient-treatment clinical courses. This course builds upon foundational dental hygiene skills learned in DHY 139   by strengthening dental hygiene comprehensive care skills through the application of evidence-based knowledge, best practices, and the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) Statement on Professionalism in Dental Education. Students learn advanced root instrumentation skills, which apply to various classifications of periodontal patients.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate understanding in comprehensive collection of patient data to include   taking/recording medical histories, performing, extra/intraoral exams, dental hard tissue, and periodontal exams to identify the physical and oral health status. (CODA Standard 2-13)

2. Understand preliminary diagnostic statements based on assessment findings to address  the patient’s   treatment needs. (CODA Standard 2-13)

3. Identify classifications for clinic patients according to calculus and periodontal classifications, including identification of caries and periodontal risk by assessments. (CODA Standard 2-13)

4. Understand dental hygiene care plans by using the evidence-based decision-making process (ADPIED) to determine a patient care plan that reflects realistic goals and treatment strategies including appropriate desensitizing and pain management. (CODA Standard 2-13)

5. Interpret problem solving strategies and management of patients using critical thinking skills to provide effective and efficient dental hygiene services. (CODA Standard 2-22)

6. Execute effective interpersonal communication skills to diverse population groups and other members of the health care team. (CODA Standard 2-15) 

7. Write complete and accurate recording of all documentation relevant to patient care. (CODA Standard 2-13)

8. Expose, process, mount and analyze diagnostic radiographs for technical errors at 80% entry-level   competency as well as classifying anatomic landmarks and pathology according to the American Dental Association guidelines for exposing radiographs. (CODA Standard 2-13)

9. Provide dental hygiene care at 80% competency for all types of classifications of periodontal disease including patients who exhibit moderate to severe periodontal disease by graduation. (CODA Standard 2-14)

10. Practice self-assessment skills in preparation for life-long learning. (CODA Standard 2-20)

11. Demonstrate a code of behavior consistent with teamwork by participating in sterilization, radiography and office assisting rotations adhering to HIPAA regulations. (CODA Standard 2-15)

12. Demonstrate professional responsibility and ethical behavior of a dental hygienist according to the ADHA Code of Ethics. (CODA Standard 2-18)

13. Demonstrate understanding of HIPAA by complying with regulations for patient privacy. (CODA Standard 2-13)

14.  When communicating, use language that is appropriate to the audience. (ILO-CS10)

15. Works well in teams and with others. (ILO-PR10)   

16. The student must be competent in providing appropriate life support measures for medical emergencies that may be encountered in the dental clinic. (CODA, 2-17)

PREPARATION FOR DENTAL HYGIENE TREATMENT

  1. Infection Control Barriers (PPE) for Patients and Clinicians

  3. Patient Reception and Ergonomic Practice

DENTAL HYGIENE DIAGNOSIS AND CARE PLANNING

  1. Utilize assessment information to create dental hygiene care plans for   

       the child, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and special needs patient populations 

       as well as all classifications of periodontal disease.

IMPLEMENTATION: PREVENTION  

  1. Preventive Counseling and Behavior Change
  2. Protocol for Prevention and control of dental caries
  3. Oral Infection Control: Toothbrushes and toothbrushing, interdental care
  4. Dentifrices and Mouth Rinses
  5. Care of Dental Prosthesis
  6. Fluorides

  1. Anxiety and Pain Control Including Dentinal Hypersensitivity

  3. Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy and Adjunctive Therapy

Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
