DHY 139 - Clinical Dental Hygiene I Description Clinical Dental Hygiene I is the first of three patient-focused clinical courses. This course focuses on beginning patient treatment and management using evidence-based knowledge and the dental hygiene process of patient care that includes the following: Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, and Documentation (ADPIED). - Demonstrate understanding in comprehensive collection of patient data to include taking/recording medical histories, performing, extra/intraoral exams, dental hard tissue, and periodontal exams to identify the physical and oral health status. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Understand preliminary diagnostic statements based on assessment findings to address the patient’s treatment needs. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Identify classifications for clinic patients according to calculus and periodontal case type, including identification of caries and periodontal risk by assessments. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Understand dental hygiene care plans by using the evidence-based decision-making process ADPIE, to determine a patient care plan that reflects realistic goals and treatment strategies including appropriate desensitizing and pain management. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Interpret problem solving strategies and management of patients using critical thinking skills to provide effective and efficient dental hygiene services. (CODA Standard 2-22)
- Execute effective interpersonal communication skills to diverse population groups and other members of the health care team. (CODA Standard 2-15)
- Write complete and accurate recording of all documentation relevant to patient care. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Expose, process, mount and analyze diagnostic radiographs for technical errors at 80% entry-level competency as well as classifying anatomic landmarks and pathology according to the American Dental Association guidelines for exposing radiographs. (CODA Standard 2-13)
- Practice self-assessment skills in preparation for life-long learning.(CODA Standard 2-20)
- Demonstrate a code of behavior consistent with teamwork by participating in Sterilization, radiography and office assisting rotations adhering to HIPAA regulations. (CODA Standard 2-15)
- Demonstrate professional responsibility and ethical behavior of a dental hygienist according to the ADHA Code of Ethics. (CODA Standard 2-18)
- Demonstrate understanding of HIPAA by complying with regulations for patient privacy. (CODA Standard 2-13)
