Corequisites: None Description: This course is an introduction to the sociology of race and ethnicity. It focuses on national issues of race, ethnicity, gender and social class, in the context of the developing global economy. The course takes a sociological and historical approach to the topic and begins with the assumption that race and ethnicity are politically and socially constructed phenomena. The course is designed to equip students with the sociological and critical thinking skills necessary to understand issues of cultural diversity. Using theoretical perspectives central to the study of race and ethnicity, each of the United States major ethnic and racial groups as well as future demographic trends are discussed.
