Corequisites: None Description: This course is an introductory genre study of poetry. The material is addressed through the function and purpose of poetic elements such as voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, sound, rhythm, form, and so forth. The course will show how poetry functions in historical, political and social contexts. The course will also increase students’ ability to understand and appreciate poetry as a form involving craft as well as creativity. The coursework involves listening, speaking, reading, writing and discussing.
