ANE 230 - Anesthesia Technology Procedure and Pathophysiology


Description
This course will discuss routine procedures performed by the Anesthesia Technologist, including landmarking, patient positioning, and anesthesia implications of surgical procedures. In addition, the mechanisms and functions of the various body systems when administering anesthetic medication will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on common pathologies that an anesthesia technologist must be aware of when administering medications, positioning, or performing ventilation techniques.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the application of anesthetic principles related to pathophysiology.
2. Explain cardiovascular pathophysiology.
3. Identify respiratory, nervous system, musculoskeletal, and immune system pathophysiology.
4. Define positioning landmarks and complications for nerve blocks.
5. Classify the correct sample tubing and IV catheters for patient lab samples.
6. Differentiate between complications associated with patient positioning and operating room
table technicities.

7. Differentiate the various levels of disinfection, aseptic technique, sterile technique, and clean.
8. Describe the use for cell salvaging and TEG patient blood samples
9. Define the ACLS algorithm for emergency patient care
10. Describe the importance of the Stanford Manual for Anesthesia Emergencies.

Course Outline:
  1. The Standford Manual Transporting patients with invasive monitoring, emergency meds and oxygen.
  2. Neurosurgery anesthesia, preparing the surgical and anesthesia areas, and specialized equipment.
  3. Thoracic and cardiac surgery anesthesia, transport, and specialized equipment.
  4. Vascular surgery anesthesia, surgical and anesthesia areas, and patient transport.
  5. Obstetric anesthesia and patients, epidural procedures and patient positioning, and intro to blood cell salvage.
  6. Neonatal and pediatric anesthesia, patient emotional support, transportation and specialized equipment.
  7. Review of material from weeks 1-6 for midterm exam.
  8. Midterm, Anesthesia for laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, patient monitoring and positioning
  9. Orthopedic surgery anesthesia, patient monitoring and specialized equipment.
  10. Transplant anesthesia, caring for and transport of donor, and emotional considerations.
  11. Preparing the anesthesia room with specialized equipment for patient monitoring.
  12. Trauma surgery and preparing the operating room.
  13. Types of trauma procedures and massive transfusion protocol.
  14. Cumulative review and final exam preparation.
