ANE 215 - Equipment and Instruments in Anesthesia Technology

This course focuses on the instrumentation utilized in providing anesthesia, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, function, application, and troubleshooting. Invasive and non-invasive, emergent and non emergent. Advanced knowledge of Anesthesia machines will be discussed and examined, as well as intubation equipment techniques and emergency responses. Students will set up and learn the use of complex Anesthesia equipment. Students will diagnose and troubleshoot minor repairs of Anesthesia equipment for proper function and maintenance. Students will demonstrate cleaning, documentation, safety, and asepsis. Students will explore policies and standards for quality assurance and process involvement. In addition, students will identify the various Regulatory Associations and credentialing in Anesthesia Technology.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Construct pressure transducers for the surgical patient efficiently.

2. Perform asepsis to assist the ACT with complex patient IV line placement.

3. Perform standard surgical case room setups with little to no assistance.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of and appropriately assist with Swan-Ganz catheter placement.

5. Identify the various types of Swan-Ganz catheters used throughout surgical cases.

6. Identify components of and correctly assemble and calibrate the Flo-Trac monitor for the specific site and Flo Trac monitors placements.

7. Perform complex surgical case room setups such as Cardiac, Thoracic, Trauma, and Transplant.

8. Identify and troubleshoot complex equipment used for surgical cases, such as; FMS and Cell Saver.

9. Assemble and identify the needs of filtration devices used for cell salvage (MicronFilters).

10. Explain and demonstrate proper assistance with emergent and unexpected difficult airway situations whenever they might arise.

11. Explain policies and procedures related to quality assurance for all anesthesia equipment used throughout surgical care.

12. Demonstrate knowledge of patient safety in the classroom and lab setting.

13. Execute intravenous lines and skin prep.

14. Demonstrate knowledge of blood gas analysis.

15. Employ complex anesthesia gas machine troubleshooting throughout surgical procedures.

16. Demonstrate non-invasive monitoring and identify EKG rhythms throughout the surgical case. 17. Demonstrate competency in equipment checkout and maintenance

18. Display knowledge of appropriate cleaning, disinfection, and sterile techniques before, during, and after each surgical case.

19. Explain the importance of the sterile surgical field.

20. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate behavior for entering and conducting duties while in the operating room in association with the sterile surgical field.

21. Explain the regulatory associations in health care facilities such as (JACHO, HIPAA, and CDC) and credentialing (ASATT/CAAHEP) in Anesthesia Technology.

Central venous catheters and hemodynamic monitoring
Pulmonary artery pressure, Swan-Ganz catheters
Point of care testing and homeostasis
Transfusion medicine (level one and Belmont introduction)
