CIS 152 - Digital Imaging I / Photoshop

Description
The primary focus of this course is experimenting with techniques used for the effective manipulation and editing of digital photographs using Photoshop software. The objective is accomplished by using a variety of electronic tools to produce, enhance and correct graphic illustrations and photographs. This course includes an intermediate level of digital image manipulation of images and text including the use of masks, layers, filters, channels, color modes and color adjustments for Print and Web design. Students create individual portfolio work and apply design principles to their digital photography. Students are recommended to take CIS 120 Introduction to Graphic Software / Photoshop / Illustration prior to taking this course if they have little or no experience with imaging software.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Analyze and apply the fundamentals of digital design to images.
Understand and demonstrate basic techniques to create and edit photographic images and text.
Determine appropriate methods to make selections with various tools, color, and to differentiate and use the transformation tools.
Understand and demonstrate a thorough understanding of layers, basic menus, tools and panels along with the pixel-based nature of Photoshop images and how bitmapped graphics differs from vector images.
Apply filters to alter an image’s appearance, blend modes to combine pixels, and layer styles to enhance the appearance of images.
Describe and demonstrate techniques to conceal and reveal pixels with layer masks, including the ability to create clipping groups to have one layer serve as a mask to preserve pixels.
Prepare graphics for print and web design
Recognize the CMYK, RGB and other color models, along with knowing how to work with color using various tools, and panels.
Use the Pen and Shape tools to create paths, convert to selections, shapes, and fill pixels.
Understand the basics of the Channels panel and be able to use it to mask areas of a layer and preserve a selection.
Demonstrate understanding of standard copyright rules.
Make effective presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices when developing a communication.
Understand the role of context, audience, and purpose when developing a communication.
Use visual representations such as graphs, charts, or graphics to enhance the meaning of the message that is being communicated.
