MRI 261 - MRI Clinical Practice I


Description
This is the first in a series of three progressive clinical courses providing the students an opportunity to observe, practice and master procedures in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) department of affiliating hospitals, clinics, or other MRI provider facilities. Students remain under the direct supervision of a technologist and/or physician while in the clinical education setting. Students will acquire knowledge and learn skills related to MRI safety, equipment, patient care, and basic imaging procedures and protocols, with emphasis on fostering the professional values, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to be successful in the healthcare environment. Students are expected to achieve a minimum of 6 competencies as listed by The American Registry of Radiologic (ARRT) following the Primary Pathway requirements. An online component will accompany the hands-on clinical practice aspect of the course to further advance learning within a learning community.

Course Outline:
Course competencies will be divided among three semesters. During the first semester students will be expected to perform a minimum of 6 of the 17 mandatory competencies.  Seven mandatory general patient care activities-Seventeen mandatory MRI procedures, and ten electives to be selected from a list of 21 MRI procedures-Six mandatory quality control tests. 

Clinical Requirements:  As part of their educational program, candidates must demonstrate competence in the clinical activities identified in this document. demonstration of clinical competence means that the program director or designee has observed the candidate performing the procedure, and that candidates must:

Outline:

1. Communicate professionally with patients and staff members.

2. Maintain a clean, comfortable, and safe environment.

3. Employ proper precautions to prevent disease transmission.

4. Monitor linens and supplies and restock when necessary.

5. Demonstrate the actions required if a patient requires sedation, contrast media, is claustrophobic, or has an allergic reaction.

6. Demonstrate an understanding of a patient’s cultural, ethical, or value system differences.

7. Demonstrate professional ethics by reserving the patient’s modesty.

8. Demonstrate how to give proper instructions to optimize patient comfort and cooperation.

9. Adhere to national, organizational, and departmental standards, protocols, policies, and procedures regarding MR exams and patient care.

10. Ensure that professional performance and competence is reflected throughout the exam.

11. Consistently maintain patient confidentiality standards.

12. Perform safe, ethical, and legal practices.

13. Maintain a safe work environment for patients, visitors, and health care workers.

14. Properly prescreen patients for contraindications to MR.

15. Ensure patient safety by correlating surgical, accident, and occupational safety.

16. Consistently maintain patient confidentiality standards.

17. Identify the safety zones within the MRI department and follow department guidelines.

18. Use standard protocols to perform routine MR examination.

19. Use Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) to archive and send images.

20. Identify when to modify a protocol and successfully perform the modification.

21. Power up and shut down the system.

22. Correlate the requested exam with clinical history and reported physical exam findings.

23. Demonstrate how to properly prepare a patient for the requested exam.

24. Ensure proper set up of coils, equipment, table accessories, and cushioning.

25. Critique images for appropriate clinical information, image quality, and patient information.

26. Demonstrate the appropriate corrective actions to improve inadequate image information.
