ES 102 - English as a Second Language: Listening and Speaking II


Description
This class helps students have more comfortable and comprehensible interactions in English. Students learn phrases and vocabulary used in specific situations. They practice their listening, speaking, and pronunciation and learn how to improve these skills for better communication.

A LOEP Accuplacer listening score of 68-74 or successful completion of the pre-requisite course is necessary to enroll in this course.

1. Use and recognize phrases and words common in conversation.

2. Listen to and understand complex conversations.

3. Understand and use complex conversation rules in a variety of interactions (polite disagreement, ending conversations, etc.).

4. Understand and respond to questions and social situations.

5. Use English more comfortably in everyday interactions.

6. Understand how common sounds are made (air flow, tongue position, etc.).

7. Hear and pronounce clearly important sound contrasts, such as plural and past tense endings.

8. Identify the syllables and understand how to use the correct stress in common words.

9. Use various pronunciation rules to speak more clearly.

10. Know and use active listening skills. 

11. When communicating, use language that is appropriate to the audience.

Course Outline:
I. Initiate activities to help students get to know one another, creating a comfortable classroom atmosphere

II. Teach vocabulary and phrases used in a variety of conversations

III. Model and practice more complex social interactions

IV. Model and practice the discussion of a variety of topics

V. Practice listening strategies that will help students to understand more complex conversations

VI. Practice listening for the main idea and supporting details

VII. Review syllables (what they are, how to count them, and the difference between strong and weak syllables)

VIII. Introduce rules about syllable stress

IX. Review and practice sentence rhythm and stress

X. Review and practice important sound contrasts, such as plural and past tense endings

XI. Practice hearing and saying sound differences more clearly, such as the difference between “v” and “b”

XII. Practice linking various words and phrases for more fluent speech

XIII. Develop a greater awareness of American culture and how it affects oral communication

XIV. Give students time throughout the semester to practice the skills that they have learned in group and pair work

Mandatory Course Components:
 -A range of instructional strategies is required. Lecture must not dominate.

-Group and/or pair work should be included in every class.

-Grades should be made up of approximately 40% speaking, 40% listening, and 20% attendance and participation in class activities.

-Speaking activities should count for a minimum of 30% of the final grade.

-A minimum of 2 individual presentations to the class and 10 informal speaking activities, such as group presentations, individual presentations to groups, role plays, group reporting, sharing listening journals, etc. should be included.

-Midterm and final exams are not required, but may be given, not to exceed 20% of the final grade.

-Emphasis should be on improving communication in various situations and on a variety of issues.

-Presentations should have clear organization and include supporting details and examples. 

-Pronunciation errors will be present, but should not impede understanding of main and supporting ideas.
