General Education Requirement: None General Education Learner Outcomes (GELO): NA Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to address the dental/oral health needs of the following types of special needs patients (CODA standard 2-8d and 2-12).
- geriatric dental patients
- dental patients with a neurologic disorder
- dental patients with diabetes;
- dental patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, esp Down syndrome and Autism
- physically disabled dental patients
- with cardiovascular or circulatory disease;
- dental patients with disturbances of the thyroid
- dental patients with HIV/AIDS
- dental patients with Gastrointestinal disorders
2. Identify potential caries and periodontal risks and related dental hygiene interventions for individual patients with special needs. (CODA Standards 2-13 and 2-22).
3. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking and problem-solving skills when planning care for patients of a variety of population groups including evaluating current literature for evidence-based decision-making. (CODA Standard 2-13 and 2-22).
4. Formulate simulated patient case studies, including patient data collection, and data analysis while working cooperatively in small groups. (CODA Standard 2-8d).
5. Conduct research and participate in discussions regarding various medically compromised and disadvantaged dental patients, by identifying specific oral symptomatology, oral/dental problems, specialized treatment and expected disease resolution. (CODA Standard 2-8d and Standard 2-12).
