The Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree. The A.A. degree allows students to complete their lower level general education requirements, as well as additional courses required for their intended transfer degree. Students who graduate with an A.A. degree are eligible to receive the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) on their GRCC transcript, if they meet the requirements of the MTA (grade of a “C” or Higher in each course used to meet the MTA). Students enrolled in the A.A. program are encouraged to seek advising to determine course selections and admission requirements of their transfer institution. Understanding these requirements prepares a student to enter an identified program or major at a specific college or university once they graduate from GRCC.
Students enrolled in the A.A. will work with a GRCC advisor or faculty member to identify their Transfer Intent, and create an individualized Transfer Plan. Transfer Plans are created by identifying a program/major at a specific 4-year institution, and mapping out general education and elective courses that will allow the student to complete the first two years of that program/major at GRCC.

General Education Courses
Select a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work from the General Education course list. Course work must be selected as directed in the areas below.
English Composition and Communications
All students must take EN 101.
Humanities
Select two (2) Humanities General Education Electives from two (2) different subject areas. Only one (1) Foreign Language course can be used for the Humanities requirement.
Foreign Language
Only one (1) Foreign Language course may be used as a Humanities General Education Elective.
History
For students who are in the 2016-2017 catalog year and after, a History course can now meet either a Humanities or Social Sciences requirement. Please note each History course can only count as either a Humanities or Social Science, not both.
Social Sciences
Select two (2) Social Sciences General Education Electives from two (2) different subject areas.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Mathematics
Select one (1) Mathematics General Education Elective.
Natural Sciences (with Lab)
Select two (2) Natural Sciences General Education courses from two (2) different subject areas; one (1) must be a lab.
Natural Sciences (Non-Lab)
Program Elective Courses
Once you have selected your English Composition and Communications, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics courses, you can take other GRCC courses to complete your degree. For maximum transferability, all courses should be chosen based on your identified program or major at the specific four-year institution you plan to attend. The number of elective credit hours you will need to take will depend on the number of credit hours you complete in General Education courses.
