QSC 255 - Metrology


Description
This course introduces students to the practical application of quality science using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) in a modern manufacturing environment. Students will learn how dimensional measurement supports quality assurance, process control, and continuous improvement across multiple manufacturing operations. Emphasis is placed on hands-on operation of a CMM to inspect parts, interpret measurement data, and make data-driven quality decisions.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Students will be able to explain fundamental concepts of manufacturing metrology, including measurement accuracy, precision, and common sources of error.
  2. Students will be able to explain the purpose and process of probe qualification using VAST XXT systems and demonstrate understanding of qualification procedures within Calypso software.
  3. Students will be able to explain foundational concepts of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), including the purpose and advantages over traditional tolerancing methods.
  4. Students will be able to create and interpret base alignments in Calypso to establish accurate part coordinate systems for measurement.
  5. Students will be able to explain the purpose and functionality of stylus system simulation in Calypso, including its role in validating measurement strategies prior to execution.
  6. Students will be able to explain the fundamentals of curve measurement in Calypso, including the purpose and applications of curve features in dimensional inspection.
