MTH 16 - Corequisite Math for Liberal Arts


Description
Students review and develop skills necessary for success in Math for Liberal Arts. Relevant topics include mathematical reasoning techniques, organizing and processing information, communicating mathematical processes, self-identifying as a mathematical thinker, learning and applying academic management skills, and arithmetic calculations relevant to MTH 116  topics. Through scaffolded assignments and activities, MTH 16 will support students who are enrolled in a linked MTH 116 - Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students  class. All students who are enrolled in MTH 116  with a Math Placement score between 7 and 29 must alsoenroll in this course.

I. Academic Management Skills

I.A. Personal assessment of mathematical knowledge

I.B. Identify Goals and Develop a plan for completing MTH 116

I.C. Use feedback to revise work

I.D. Demonstrate how to take notes in a math course on both lecture and group work

I.E. Identify when and how to use appropriate resources such as textbooks, online materials, office hours, and tutoring support. 

I.F. Monitor and adjust emotions, attitudes, and habits when facing academic challenges.

I.G. Understand and explain how intelligence can be grown through persistence, attitude, and engagement. 

II. Communicating Mathematical Thinking

II.A. Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution using written words.

II.B.  Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution using symbolic notation.

II.C.  Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution via an oral presentation.

II.D.Utilize multiple representations (verbal, tabular, graphical, symbolic) to support a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution.

III. Problem Solving Strategies

III.A. Identify and apply a variety of techniques for solving a problem such as drawing a diagram, making a table or list, trying something, and solving a smaller problem.

III.B. Utilize mathematical strategies to process information into mathematical ideas, processes, arguments, or solutions.

III.C. Assess reasonableness of assumptions and solutions

III.D. Just in time mathematical reasoning support for MTH 116

 

IV. Calculation Skills using appropriate technology

IV.A.Compute the remainder when dividing by natural numbers using a variety of strategies, including invented ones. 

IV.B. Simplify rational numbers written as a ratio of two factorial expressions

IV.C. Compute the arithmetic and geometric means of two numbers.

IV.D. Round a positive decimal up or down to an integer using the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, the floor, or the ceiling.

IV.E. Fluently convert between decimals, percents, and fractions.

V. Exploring Mathematical Identity

V.A. Reflect on personal experiences with mathematics and how they impact attitudes toward mathematics.

V.B.  Identify a variety of ways in which mathematics contributes to human flourishing.
