MTH 12 - Corequisite for Intermediate Algebra


Description
Corequisite for Intermediate Algebra allows students the extra time to develop the effective and mathematical reasoning skills necessary to meet the course learning outcomes of MTH 112 Intermediate Algebra. This course is designed for students with Math Placement scores of 7 - 29 and have previously taken an Algebra course MTH 112.  All students who are enrolled in with a Math Placement score between 7 and 29 must also enroll in this course.

  1. Use the language, symbols, and structure of algebra and the key characteristics of functions and their representations (symbols, graphs, tables) to investigate, represent, and solve problems.
  2. Develop self - awareness and take initiative to fill in skill and knowledge gaps in mathematics needed for MA 107. 
  3. Recognize when they need help,  where to find the help and make use of the available resources.
  4. Seek, receive and utilize feedback. 
  5. Develop strategies to maintain motivation and persistence.

Course Outline:
I. Academic Management Skills

          I.A. Use feedback to revise work.

I.B. Periodically review progress and make a plan for completing work.

I.C. Demonstrate how to take notes in a math course on both lecture and group work.

I.D. Identify when and how to use appropriate resources such as textbooks, online materials, office hours, and tutoring support. 

I.E. Monitor and adjust emotions, attitudes, and habits when facing academic challenges.

I.F. Understand and explain how intelligence can be grown through persistence, attitude, and engagement. 

II. Problem Solving

II.A. Identify and apply a variety of techniques for solving mathematical and algebraic problems. 

II.B . Utilize mathematical strategies to process information into mathematical  ideas, processes, arguments, or solutions.

II.C. Assess reasonableness of assumptions and solutions.

II.D. Just in time algebraic reasoning support for MA 107.

II.E. Just in time computation support for MA 107.

III.  Calculation Skills using appropriate technology

 III.A. Compute integers, rational numbers, exponents, and radical expressions.  

 III.B. Round a positive decimal up or down.

           III.C. Simplify rational numbers and expressions. 

III.D. Fluently convert between decimals, percents, and fractions. 

IV. Communicating Mathematical Thinking

IV.A. Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution using written words.

IV.B. Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution using symbolic notation.

IV.C. Explain a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution via an oral presentation.

IV.D. Utilize multiple representations (verbal, tabular, graphical, symbolic) to support a mathematical idea, process, argument, or solution.

V. Exploring Mathematical Identity

V.A. Reflect on personal experiences with mathematics and how they impact attitudes toward mathematics.
